Overview
"Total Maldives" trip
Why pick an area of the Maldives to surf when you don’t have to! We here at The Perfect Wave have created the “Total Maldives” trip. You will surf every atoll from the North Male to Southern atolls of Gaafu Dhaalu with the man that knows the areas better than anybody else, Martey. This trip is a fully flexible no limitations surf surfari taking you to secret spots around the island paradise chain with just you and your mates for company, except of course the abundant marine life. This is the first trip of its kind so be part of history and get on board with Martey and experience this truly awesome surf destination.
The price includes domestic airfare (Male to Gaafu Dhaalu or Gaafu Dhaalu to Male) and 12 nights aboard Cobia with Martey as guide. Minimum 8 people required.
Central Atolls
The Meemu, Thaa and Laamu Atoll offer spots exposed to all directions and for all levels. All spots in the Meemu Atoll are on a coast line facing to the east. There is always a left- or a right-hander well-protected from the predominant south westerly wind directions. South-easterly or even easterly winds may affect all spot negatively. All spots are close to each other so that you can change spots within a few minutes!
The Thaa Atoll picks up south east swell and may be even bigger than spots on east facing coastlines of other atolls. Due to its secluded location, it is almost guaranteed that you will not even spot another surf charter during your stay. The spots are well protected from North to Northwest winds. Conditions may be fickle with other wind directions. This area will be chosen only in very stable weather conditions.
Spots in the Laamu Atoll are spread from the south facing coastline along the east facing up to the north-east corner where waves wrap around. As a result you will find spots protected from all wind directions except a rare straight easterly breeze.
Southern / Outer Atolls
It is often said that the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (also named Huvadhoo Atoll) offers the best conditions of the Maldives. It works best in March, April and September to November. It picks up more swell than any other Atoll in the Maldives and from every direction. The Gaafu Dhaalu area offers the greatest quantity and variety of spots. To almost every island on the outside of the atoll, you will find one or two breaks. There is everything from barreling and hollow walls to soft and never ending playful waves. May to August can be fickle as the wind turns more southerly and may affect some of the south facing spots.
After you arrive in Male you will fly down south where our guide will pick you up at the local airport in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Anchors are lifted and you head off to one of the main 10-15 breaks or to some of the other less known spots. The Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll offers the greatest variety of all atolls and most diverse breaks. You will find everything from mellow long board waves to the hollow barrels. Depending on the wind direction our experienced surf guide will find spots for you that are working best at the time. Most days, you will surf up to 6 hours or even longer if you can handle it! After some of the best surf of your life, you will be dropped off at the Gaafu Dhaalu airport and flown back to Male.
For More information on the Southern/ Outer Atolls, with break descriptions and seasonality, please check out our Central & Southern Atolls region page.
The Boat
The 21 meter long cruise boat, Cobia is conceived and built by the skilful Maldivian craftsmen for the Maldivian waters. This beautiful cruiser with its comfortable and air-conditioned rooms accommodates a maximum of 10 passengers but for optimal comfort we recommend 8 passengers to have the boat exclusively for just you and your mates. With fewer passengers they provide more privacy and guarantee our full attention at all times. Its peculiar design/size enables it to cut through difficult and shallow waters and also meander its way through winding channels between islands a common feature in Maldivian waters. Cobia can anchor at close proximity of the islands making your time on board the cruiser more convenient. On Cobia, we strive to provide value for money.
Captain & Crew
At the head of the crew of 4, you’ll find the licensed captain. He is ultimately in control of the safari. Cobia's captain has decades of experience boat chartering in the Maldives, and is supported by a second in charge, boat boy, and a full time chef. The boat boy will be in charge of guest services and one will be a dinghy boy and in charge of anchoring. The crew are all local Maldivians so know the area extensively and you can be confident of their skills & expertise.
One of the most important parts of any surf charter is the surf guide. On the Cobia, we have the most experienced surf guide in the Maldives, with 12 years experience all accumulated on safari boats, starting on Rani Safari and for the last 8 years guiding Handhu and Handhu Fahli - Martey. No surf guide has better knowledge of Maldives surfing points, in particular the Central and Outer Atolls which require expert navigation to find the perfect waves, than Martey. He is 31 years of age and loves the surf, he has great English communication skills and understands the wants and needs of the surf traveller. Martey lived and was educated in Sri Lanka, has travelled extensively abroad and after returning to his homeland, Maldives, chose the surf industry as his career. He holds his Captain's safari boat license and works to provide for his family.

Surf charters take on a life of their own and you often feel that you never want them to end. If there is such a thing as too much fun then we have certainly found it on this trip!.. Last night the crew threw a party for us. Not your average ‘traditional sing-along’, instead they brought their mates on board and everyone was up and dancing, pretty awesome way to end the trip! The entire charter has been amazing. I can’t wait until the next one!…

I've been home now for a couple of weeks after my trip to the Maldives. I was on a live aboard surf boat called Cobia - takes 8 with 5 crew. I shared a cabin with a friend. 12 days all included. I had some of the best surf of my life with a good 4 to 6 foot swell and some times 2 surfs a day even 3 a day. Water temp 30 degs and viz up to 30 m. We went to north Male' islands and south Male' islands and surfed breaks called Chickens were i snaped my board clean in half on a rouge set. It was like an axe that chopped me in half. Other places called Cokes as there is a Coca Cola factory on the island that makes bottle water, desalinated from the sea water. Sultans, Pasta point, Hokies, Jails break as there is a old jail there. Rip tide and a fast left called happy dazes. We walked around some of the villages which are quite small and most are only a meter above sea level. Lot of resorts and an ideal place to have a holiday. Enjoy the photo. Regards, Pete.

Was an epic couple of weeks. Those phantom big swells never did quite hit but we had some cracking days and some decent 5' pulses so happy days!! Big ups to Marty. Awesome guide, loving the local knowledge, make sure you hang on to him!! Mentioned it to him at the time, but let him know that he is welcome at ours if he makes it to Melb's during his Ozzie sojourn later this year. The rest of the crew were fantastic, especially the chef…Gold. Will certainly be back. Onya!! Cheers

Hi Josh ! The trip on Cobia was just perfect. We surfed everyday, most sessions there was just us as there was no other boat around. Well, maybe not just us as there were manta rays, turtles and dolphins as well! Fun waves, with some bigger days (range from shoulder high to solid overhead, even one double overhead session). Best session was at Tucky Joe's, perfect, empty & barreling (see attached photo). The crew was the best, apparently Marty is really the best surf guide in Maldives, and the Chef was great like the rest of the crew. The boat is a bit slow but that wasn't a problem as it allowed to enjoy the cruise and beautiful landscape. The other Aussie guests were very nice people and they shared waves with me, the landlocked Swiss surfer. I could make a lot of progress in terms of surfing. And we were only 6 guests instead of 12 (max capacity) so plenty of room and good vibe on board. In the end of the trip we went back to North Male where I met Brian from perfectwave @ Cokes surf camp. Even the waves in North Male (Sultans, Jails, etc) were not that crowded. Like I said it was a perfect trip and will do it again in the future, for sure. Cheers

Waking up on our boat in the Maldives is hardly what you would call 'roughing it'. Eager as can be, we were all up well before the sun and heading out for our first surf. Our crew was the first out on a pretty decent right hand reef break and everyone enjoyed some fun waves before breakfast. We are lucky enough on this trip to be accompanied by one of the best surf guides in the business. While filling our bodies with food he checked all the charts and decided to head a little further afield. His knowledge of the area proving to be spot on when he delivered us to a fast, hollow left with no one else around… What was meant to be a lunchtime surf turned into an all afternoon marathon session with the crew on the boat bring us a soft drink in the line-up! As I said, surfing here is hardly what you would call ‘roughing it…’

We stayed on the Cobia for 12 nights awesome trip scored waves from 3-6ft the whole trip and the crowds were very low, surfed a number of times with only the boys on our boat, how good is that. As for the fishing second to none G.T 18kg, Bluefin 12kg, red coral grouper 15kg, Wahoo 24kg, travelly 10kg and then there was about a dozen or more small fish from 5-7kg. As for the crew could not find a better bunch of guys, whatever you need they will get and do, the boat was spacious and very comfortable. We've booked again for 2010
